and how it relates to the notion of CQI in graduate medical education
9:15-10:15 am The ACGME Assessment "Toolbox, " Susan Swing, PhD
In this session Dr. Swing will give an overview of the assessment methods reviewed by the ACGME and recommended to residencies as they develop their own programs to assess residents in the core competencies

10:30-11:30 am Developing a "Portfolio" for Meeting the Core Competency Requirements, Daniel Duffy, MD
In this session, Dr. Duffy will discuss the effort by ABIM to develop a useful "portfolio" for residency directors in implementing their core competency programs
11:30 am-12:30 pmPanel Discussion: Jeffrey Graff, MD, ABEM, Robert Strauss, MD, RRC-EM, David Leach, MD ACGME and Debra Perina, MD CORD
In this session, panel discussants will elaborate on concepts presented, provide the perspective of emergency medicine accrediting and certifying organizations, and answer relevant questions from participants

In this session, participants in six groups related to each of the six core competencies will define and describe their respective educational objectives for emergency medicine residents both overall and for each of their years of training

3:15-4:45 pmReport of Breakout Groups
In this session, group leaders will present a summary of the specific emergency medicine objectives for each of the core competencies, to give participants an overall framework for discussion, and to discuss possible areas of overlap and integration

8:30 am -12:30 pmBreakout sessions: Learning about Assessment
There will be four one-hour breakout sessions, reviewing newer and/or less familiar types of assessment methodologies, such as Use of Models/Simulators; The Clinical Evaluation Exercise (CEX); the 360 Degree Evaluation Instrument; Resident Portfolios. Participants will rotate among four one hour sessions to learn about and discuss the advantages, disadvantages and application of a range of evaluation methods useful for resident assessment with which they may not be familiar
12:30-1:30 pmLunch Break
1:30-3:00 pmBreakout Sessions: Identifying Best Evaluation Methods for the Core Competencies
In this session, groups for each of the six core competencies will meet to discuss their suggestions for the best evaluation methods for each of the core competencies
3:00-4:30 pmReport of Working Groups
In this session, group leaders will report their recommendations for best evaluation methods for each of the core competencies, and the entire group will discuss issues such as integration of these methods for assessment across the competencies
4:30-5:00 pmSummary and Recommendations: The Next Steps
