Milestones describe specific competencies in Emergency Medicine representing the most important characteristics of a successful EM resident. There are 23 core milestones, rated levels 1-5, with level one expected at the beginning of intern year and level 5 expected of graduated residents. The Emergency Medicine Milestones were created by the Emergency Medicine Milestones Working Group under the direction of the Emergency Medicine Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Residents who develop competency in the 23 milestones are prepared for a career in Emergency Medicine.
