A Message from CORD on the ACGME’s Updated Program Requirements

Today marks an important milestone for emergency medicine education as the ACGME released its decision regarding the revised Emergency Medicine Program Requirements. Throughout this process, members of our community have demonstrated a deep commitment to the future of our specialty through thoughtful dialogue, advocacy, and engagement. While perspectives on specific proposals have varied, our shared goal has remained constant: ensuring the highest quality training for future emergency physicians and the patients they serve.

We appreciate the thoughtful review process undertaken by the ACGME and recognize the significant effort invested by educators, trainees, program leaders, and other stakeholders who contributed perspectives throughout this process.

The decision to maintain flexibility in program length while adopting other revisions to the Emergency Medicine Program Requirements reflects the complexity of residency education and the diversity of training environments across our specialty. Emergency medicine has a long history of excellence across both three-year and four-year training programs, and we remain confident in the ability of programs to continue preparing outstanding emergency physicians under the updated standards.

Our attention now turns to understanding, implementing, and evaluating the newly adopted requirements. We are committed to working collaboratively to provide guidance, resources, and forums for shared learning during this transition. We encourage ongoing evaluation of the impact of these changes on trainees, programs, workforce needs, and patient care.

We look forward to working together across the specialty to ensure that these revisions achieve their intended goals while maintaining the flexibility and innovation that have long characterized emergency medicine training. Above all, we remain united in our commitment to advancing emergency medicine education and supporting the success of current and future trainees.
