CORD recently joined fellow emergency medicine organizations in submitting a joint letter to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) expressing significant concerns about proposed changes to the federal grant review process that could impact biomedical and emergency medicine research.
Emergency medicine research has led to many of the advances that improve patient care every day. These breakthroughs are made possible through a federal research system that relies on independent scientific peer review and sustained investment.
The proposed changes could have far-reaching implications for our specialty by:
- Undermining the role of independent scientific experts in evaluating research proposals.
- Restricting international research collaborations and limiting participation based on citizenship.
- Creating uncertainty around federally funded research by allowing grants to be terminated based on changing agency priorities rather than objective performance measures.
- Limiting the dissemination of research findings through publications and scientific conferences.
Together with our emergency medicine partners, CORD urged OMB to preserve a grant review process grounded in scientific merit, protect collaboration across the research community, and ensure stable funding for research that advances emergency care and improves patient outcomes.
